Why the first trimester sucks, sucks, sucks

Let me first preference this post by saying a couple of things:
     1.  I am a crabby pregnant girl who might be sharing TMI
          Read at your own risk!
     2.  I am aware that others have had it worse but I still need to vent.
     3.  It is still all VERY worth it and after my rant I am going to suck it up (well, mostly)

But now on with the whining...
Why oh why does the first trimester come with some of the worst symptoms?
I have had days without an end to my nausea, and hunger makes it worse but then food grosses me out or makes me feel ill as soon as I eat.

I have to pee ALL the time.  I wake up 3 or 4 times each night just to pee!  I can't even take a weekend nap without having to get up and pee.  My toilet paper bill just doubled.

I was popping out of my normal clothes at 6 weeks thanks to bloat and officially into full-time maternity clothes at 10 weeks.  This means I had to purchase all new work clothes, but I had to do so online because Stillwater doesn't have a single store that sells maternity pants.  Which meant I had to return half of what I ordered because it wasn't the right size and wait for the new package.  I just feel uncomfortable and fat!

And what is with the never ending boob pain?  Tender breasts is the understatement of the century.  It feels like someone is stabbing me in the nipple with even the slightest movement.  OWWWWW!  I realize things are changing in there but can it be done with less pain?  I have to wear a bra 24/7 just to help spare me from any movements!

Holy sense of smell.  I could be an excellent drug sniffer right now.  Sometimes it's not bad, fresh shampoo or perfume.  But more often than not the students I am working with need to do laundry, brush their teeth or take a shower.  I have had to lean away from more than a few students lately because of the stink coming off them!

And don't get me started on the sheer exhaustion lately.  I take two naps on the weekends and I am falling asleep at 9PM on the weekdays.  Even despite the nights I am in bed early, I am dragging to get through the workday.  And no caffeine when your pregnant so coffee can't help me!  I just need a nap!

The mood swings are interesting.  I can tear up at the drop of the hat or yell at Chet without cause.   Lately I have cried watching the news, Ellen, Oprah, and Julie and Julia.

And the list could go on and on:
Heart burn - Check!
moodiness - Check!
Back pain - Check
Swollen ankles - Check!
Food aversions- Check!
constipation - Check!
Weight gain - Check!
feeling like crud - check! Double Check!

But then I think about 10 fingers and 10 toes.
A baby giggle.
An OSU onesie.
Feeling the first kick.
and just like that it doesn't seem so bad. When I take it all in and remember my child is going to be here in September I start to feel a whole lot better.
But on the bad days when I feel really, really bad I blame Chet.

Two's a couple, but three's a crowd!

First comes love, then comes marriage.... then on Sept 1st comes baby Skimbo in a baby carriage!

Chet and I found out that the week before Christmas that I was pregnant.  Basically we decided to starting trying for a family and WHAM! it happened in the blink of an eye!  The timing was perfect to surprise our Moms on Christmas morning with the big news!  For Trina I found a set of lime green (her favorite color) bibs that said "Grandmom loves me" and wrapped those to go under the tree.  She unwrapped them and started smiling from ear to ear!

It was hard for me not to be home this Christmas to break the news to my own family but I recruited my brother Josh to help with Mission: Baby Socks.  Josh bought a set of tiny baby socks and wrapped them for me.  Then when I called Christmas morning he had the video camera rolling.  Mom didn't suspect anything and happily unwrapped the gift, but as soon as she realized what it was she was screaming!  It's a great video that I can't get enough of!

My doctor set my first ultrasound at 10 weeks on Feb. 3rd.  I am so excited to be able to see the little baby and hear the heartbeat for the first time.  Chet is excited too, and even he couldn't keep the secret!  At eight weeks along we told most of our families and friends and it has been a blast to break the news to everyone!  I was terrible at keeping the secret so many friends had been clued in early!  It was too good of news not to share!

So far I am feeling good and healthy.  I had a couple of weeks with 24/7 nausea which was no fun but thankfully a prescription from the doctors office has given me some relief.  I also like preggie pops, which help settle my stomach.  I have learned that my daily feelings are only tired, nauseous, hungry or a combination of those three.  Pregnancy symptoms are strange - some you expect and some are just odd.  Like why in world do I have more spit?  But the fat ankles and tight pants are normal.  Though some days are hard (last night I feel asleep at 8:15pm!) other days are super fun (seeing everyone's face when I share the news).  This is going to be quite the journey, one I feel I have been waiting for a long, long time.

I am loving reading books and websites that share info about the development of the baby, its quite a miracle how all this works!  Currently, I have a raspberry baby!  I can't wait to have a baby bump and I am already wearing some stretchy waisted pants because my normal clothes are tight and uncomfortable.  But something I really apperciate is having several friends who have just had babies or are pregnant with me.  It's such a blessing to have others share this journey with me, and I love all the baby talk and advice.  But please people, stop telling me my life is going to change.  YES, I AM COMPLETELY AWARE OF AND EXCITED FOR THE CHANGE!

So the count down to Sept. 1st begins (223 days).  It's going to be a long exciting summer!  I am so happy to become a Mom!

Some lovely internet finds....

It was a very, very, VERY long few weeks leading up to Christmas and the week post Christmas in my office.  Once school lets out or nears finals the students forget about their internship/job searches in favor of preparing for finals or vacations so there isn't much to do in the office.  In fact, for the most part it's been a complete yawnfest.  So in the infinite time I had to waste sitting at my computer I came across several interesting articles, videos, websites and more and I thought I would share my favorites.  Bored?  Want to be uplifted?  Check out some of these websites:

A great poem/song about how to be alone. I agree that being okay with just you is a wonderful thing. I did this on sandy beach in Florida during one long lonely summer that taught me so much about myself.

I am sure there are many more but I love the things that show the good in the world and I see God in a lot of these things.  I think it is always time worth spent to revel in the small wonderful things in our world.  Thank goodness the internet led me to them!

Office Make Over

We took advantage of the Christmas break to do a couple projects around the house.  Including hiring a contractor to install built in shelves and cabinets in my office.  They look amazing and we are thrilled with the final work.  Last step is to stain the wood, a project I plan to do in the spring.  One more thing crossed off the list.  Last major project is the pool liner and deck, hopefully to be completed this summer and the car port coming soon!  With my brother Josh coming in only 2 weeks it was perfect timing since he will be bringing a lot of my photo work and negatives from college.  Now I have a place to safely store them!  All the shelves are adjustable and very well done.  It was the perfect addition to my office and we hope improves the value of the home!  Thanks to Paul for a job well done!  P.S. Juli - can you count all the 31 bags in the picture?
